The Travel Agencies Regulation Act, 1958

Section 6.

2) For the purposes of this regulation, proper books of account shall not be deemed to be kept with respect to the matters aforesaid unless there are kept properly written up in the English language such books as are necessary to give a true and fair view of the state of the travel agency's affairs and to explain its transactions.

Section 13.

4) Every amateur radio station shall identify itself at the end of each transmission in the English language, regardless of the language used during transmission.

5) The identifications required in this regulation shall be given on each frequency being utilized and shall be transmitted by telegraphy, using the International Morse code, or by telephony using the English language with which the use of a nationally or internationally recognized standard phonetic alphabet as an aid for correct telephony identification is encouraged.

Section 14.

4) Where communications are carried on in a language other than English, special entry shall be made in the radio log book in relation thereto which shall state-

(a) the language that was used in the communications;

(b) the name of each person at the licensee's station who was engaged in the communications; and

(c) the call sign of the station worked.

Section 32.

1) Where there is in operation a valid Agreement between Jamaica and some other country, for the granting of reciprocal amateur radio operating privileges to the nationals of one country when visiting the other country, the Postmaster-General may, on application being made in the form set out as Form C in the Second Schedule, issue a permit in the form set out as Form D in the Second Schedule for the operation of an amateur radio station in Jamaica for a specified period, to a citizen or national of any other country aforesaid, who is the holder of an amateur radio operator's licence valid in the country of which he is a citizen or national.

(a) in the case of radiotelegraph operations, he shall transmit the call sign issued to him by the licensing country followed by the fraction-bar (/) and the amateur call sign prefix of Jamaica;

(b) in the case of radiotelephone operations, he shall transmit the call sign in English issued to him by the licensing country followed by the words "fixed", "portable" or "mobile", as the case may be, and the call sign prefix of Jamaica;

(c) at least once during each contact with another amateur station, he shall indicate in English, the geographical location of his station as nearly as possible by town or parish.

Article 32

The Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act, 1974

Section 3.

Subject to the provisions of subsection (2) of section 11 of the Act, no person shall be registered as a medical laboratory technologist unless he has sufficient knowledge of the English language to enable him to practise his profession efficiently in Jamaica and he holds -

a) a degree in medical technology from a recognized university; or

b) the certificate in medical technology of the Society of Medical Technologists (West Indies); or

c) any other qualification in medical technology considered by the Council to be of at least equivalent standard as those specified in paragraphs (a) and (b).

Section 8.

Subject to the provisions of subsection (2) of section 11 of the Act, no person shall be registered as a radiographer unless he has sufficient knowledge of the English language to enable him to practise his profession efficiently in Jamaica and he holds-

(a) a degree in radiography from a recognized university;

(b) membership in the Society of Radiographers (Jamaica); or

(c) any other qualification in radiography considered by the Council to be of at least equivalent standard as those specified in paragraphs (a) and (b).

Section 13

Subject to the provisions of subsection (2) of section 11 of the Act, no person shall be registered as a physiotherapist unless he has sufficient knowledge of the English language to enable him to practise
his profession efficiently in Jamaica and he holds-

(a) a degree in physiotherapy from a recognized university; or

(b) membership in the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (London); or

(c) any other qualification in physiotherapy considered by the Council to be of at least equivalent standard as those specified in paragraphs (a) and (b).

Section 18.

Subject to the provisions of subsection (2) of section 11 of the Act, no person shall be registered as an occupational therapist unless he has sufficient knowledge of the English language to enable him to practise his profession efficiently in Jamaica and he holds a qualification in occupational therapy recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Section 23.

Subject to the provisions of subsection (2) of section 11 of the Act, no person shall be registered as a dietitian unless he has sufficient knowledge of the English language to enable him to practise his profession efficiently in Jamaica and he holds-

(a) a degree in Foods and Nutrition from a recognized university or recognized college and has either completed at one year's dietetic internship or had such other experience in dietetics in an approved hospital as may be acceptable to
the Council; or

(b) any other qualification in Foods and Nutrition as may be considered by the Council to be of at least equivalent standardas that specified in paragraph (a).

Section 28.

Subject to the provisions of subsection (2) of section 11 of the Act, no person shall be registered as a speech therapist unless he has sufficient knowledge of the English language to enable him to practise his profession efficiently in Jamaica and-

(a) he holds a degree in speech therapy from a recognized university: or

(b) he is a Licentiate of the College of Speech Therapists (London); or

(c) he has such other qualification in speech therapy as may be considered by the Council to be of at least equivalent standard as those specified in paragraphs (a) and (b).

Article 8

Sous réserve des dispositions du paragraphe 2 de l'article 11 de la loi, nul ne peut être reconnu comme radiologue, sauf s'il a une connaissance suffisante de la langue anglaise pour lui permettre de pratiquer sa profession en Jamaïque avec efficacité et qu'il détient :

(a) un diplôme en radiologie d'une université reconnue;

(b) est membre de la Société des radiologues (Jamaïque); ou

(c) toute autre qualification en radiologie reconnue par le Conseil comme ayant un standard au moins équivalent à ceux indiqués aux paragraphes a) et b).

Article 13

Sous réserve des dispositions du paragraphe 2 de l'article 11 de la loi, nul ne peut être reconnu comme physiothérapeute, sauf s'il a une connaissance suffisante de la langue anglaise pour lui permettre de pratiquer sa profession en Jamaïque avec efficacité et qu'il détient :

(a) un diplôme en physiothérapie d'une université reconnue; ou

(b) est membre de la Société des physiothérapeutes diplômés (London); ou

(c) toute autre qualification en physiothérapie reconnue par le Conseil comme ayant un standard au moins équivalent à ceux visés aux paragraphes a) et b).

Article 18

Sous réserve des dispositions du paragraphe 2 de l'article 11 de la loi, nul ne peut être reconnu comme ergothérapeute, sauf s'il a une connaissance suffisante de la langue anglaise pour lui permettre de pratiquer sa profession avec efficacité en Jamaïque et qu'il détient une qualification en ergothérapie reconnue par la Fédération mondiale des ergothérapeutes.

Sous réserve des dispositions du paragraphe 2 de l'article 11 de la loi, nul ne peut être reconnu comme diététicien, sauf s'il a une connaissance suffisante de la langue anglaise pour lui permettre de pratiquer sa profession avec efficacité en Jamaïque et qu'il détient:

(a) un diplôme en aliments et nutrition d'une université ou d'une école reconnue et avoir terminé au moins une année d'Un stage en diététique ou avoir toute autre expérience en diététique dans un hôpital approuvé comme étant acceptable au Conseil; ou

(b) toute autre qualification en aliments et nutrition reconnue par le Conseil comme ayant un standard au moins équivalent à ceux indiqués au paragraphe a).

Sous réserve des dispositions du paragraphe 2 de l'article 11 de la loi, nul ne peut être reconnu comme orthophoniste, sauf s'il a une connaissance suffisante de la langue anglaise pour lui permettre de pratiquer sa profession avec efficacité en Jamaïque et qu'il détient:

(a) un diplôme en orthophonie d'une université reconnue ; ou

(b) un diplôme du Collège des orthophonistes (Londres); ou

(c) toute autre qualification en orthophonie reconnue par le Conseil comme ayant un standard au moins équivalent à ceux indiqués au paragraphe a) et b).

2) Any person desirous of obtaining a licence in accordance with paragraph (1) shall make an application to the Minister containing-

(h) a certificate in the English language in addition, to any other language, from the manufacturer, respecting 'the safety of the new drug conditions of use recommended, and giving the conditions under which it may be sold, issued by an official body or government department having authority to issue such certificate, such official body or government department having the experience and facilities for testing the safety of a new drug that are considered by the Minister as adequate to ensure the safety of the new drug under the conditions of use recommended.

Application for Licence.

4) Each applicant shall also cause to be delivered to the Collector of Taxes of the parish along with the deposit required by subsection (1) a certificate signed by the Chief Officer of Constabulary or a Justice of the parish in which the application is made that the applicant is able to read and write the English language and to keep the book required to be kept by a licensed produce dealer.

1) Every licensed produce dealer shall keep a book wherein he shall record in the English language at the time of purchase of any agricultural produce the date of such purchase, the description of such produce, the weight, number, grade according to the number of hands or quantity of such produce, the price paid for the same, the name and address of the person from whom he or anyone on his behalf actually received such produce, the name and address of the owner of such produce, and where the receipt is of bananas, coconuts or citrus fruit, the place where and the person by whom such produce was grown or produced; [...]

Qualification of Jurors

1) Subject to subsections (2), (3) and (4), every person not less than eighteen years and not more than sixty-five years of age, whose name is on any current official list of electors for elections to the House of Representatives and who resides in Jamaica, is qualified and liable to serve on juries.

2) No person who-

(a) is not a Commonwealth citizen; or

(b) cannot speak, read and write English; or

(c) is at the date on which he is required to serve as a -

(i) a person awaiting trial in a Resident Magistrate's Court for an indictable offence; or

(i) a person in respect of whom a preliminary inquiry into an indictable offence is pending or who has been committed for trial for such an offence;

6) The Board shall not recommend the grant of a licence or, subject to paragraph (7). a provisional licence unless it is satisfied that the application is made in accordance with these Regulations and -

a) where the applicant is an individual--

(i) that he is a resident of Jamaica:

(ii) that he holds at least a General Certificate of Education at the ordinary level, or its equivalent, in two or more subjects, including English Language, and satisfied the Board that he is proficient in commercial arithmetic, or that he has passed such qualifying examination as may be held by the Board pursuant to regulation 147A or is exempt therefrom pursuant to paragraph (3) of that regulation;

Translation.

Where any document required for the purposes of the customs laws contains any words not in the English language, the person required to produce such document shall produce therewith a correct translation thereof in English.

Use of English Language.

1) Except where otherwise provided in this Act, all correspondence, documents, forms or other writings shall be in the English language, and in the case of the crew agreement, official log book and muster lists, in a prescribed form save that a foreign language version of any document may be appended to the English language version thereof.

2) All written signs displayed on board a Jamaican ship shall be in the English language with, if it is considered to be necessary by the master, a foreign language version appended there to.

Crew's knowledge English.

1) A Jamaican ship shall not proceed to sea where in the opinion of the Director the crew of the ship consists of, or includes persons who may not understand orders given to them in the course of their duty because of their insufficient knowledge of English and the absence of adequate arrangements for transmitting orders in a language of which they have sufficient knowledge, and the Director shall inform the master of his opinion.

1) At any time before payment is made for any goods (whether sold as new or used) a provider shall, in addition to the requirements of any other enactment relating to the packaging, labelling or description of goods, provide to the consumer, verbally or in writing in the English language, all information concerning the goods being sold.
